There are various approaches you may use to beat the summer heat, as the weather changes, we anticipate staggered heatwaves throughout the summer in Victoria. Here at Coastal Heat Pumps, we have put together tips to accommodate varying budgets, comfort levels, and suggestions to help you beat the heat!
Dress Appropriately & Apply Sunscreen:
Wear loose, light-coloured, lightweight clothes to combat the warm weather. White or light colours can reflect the sun’s rays, helping you stay cooler. Another great option is to apply sunscreen to exposed skin prior to going outdoors. Remember to apply it even when driving in your car as UV rays can penetrate your vehicle’s windows and reach your skin.
Apply Cold Compresses:
Apply ice packs or cold compresses to various parts of your body if you are feeling too warm. For example, you can apply ice packs to your wrist or the back of your neck to quickly cool yourself. Avoid using ice packs directly on your skin as doing so can cause ice burns. It is important to use a clothing layer or towel. Taking cold showers or baths will also help to cool you down. Try to avoid a sudden change in temperature as this can be a shock to your body’s systems.
Stay Hydrated:
Your body loses water through sweating during warm weather. You can easily dehydrate when you’re in extreme summer temperatures for prolonged periods. It is always good to bring a bottle of water with you on your way out the door. Drinking adequate fluids throughout the day does help to protect you from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Stay Indoors:
If you must leave the house on a very warm day, it may help to limit your time outdoors by having frequent breaks to go inside your home or other air-conditioned areas to cool off. One fun thing would be to go to air-conditioned places such as a library, mall, restaurant, movie theatre, or even a water park to stay cool.
Keep Your Home Cool:
There are many ways to keep your home cooler in the summer months. For example, you can prevent the sun from heating your home by closing shades and windows during the day and leaving the windows open at night to let cooler air into your home. You could use your BBQ to make dinner rather than turning your oven on. Doing these types of things are also cost effective and ways to also save money on your monthly energy bills.
Having a Heat Pump Installed
One of the significant benefits of a ductless heat pump is that it not only heats your home during winter, but can also cool your home during the summer. A heat pump uses electricity to extract heat from a source, reducing its temperature and therefore is more energy efficient. As a result, your home will be cooler which means you and your family will enjoy better comfort throughout your home.
At Coastal Heat Pump we have a great team who can assist you in working towards the process of having a heat pump installed and never having to worry about the extreme heat of a BC summer.
